WEEK 12 - Day 1
The Holy Spirit reveals baptism as a source of grace

Introduction
As a child we received Baptism as a pure and undeserved gift.  Most everyone who reads this will say the same.  The "new birth" was given to us.  We were cleansed of our sin (Eph. 5:26).  "Growing together, grew together" (Romans 6:5, literally translated) as a "branch" of the "tree" Jesus Christ, (John 15:5) we became "incorporated" into the body of Christ as a "member" (I Cor. 12:13) and as a "stranger" we became a "member of the household" of God (Eph. 2:19). All this happened before we could do anything about this ourselves (John 3:3-6),.  The symbolic pictures with which the New Testament paints the gift of Baptism in the heart are valuable for our meditation so we can grasp and understand in deeper ways the greatness of this gift of grace.  In such meditation the reality that has already taken possession of us is revealed to us.  "Become what you are", says the Apostle Paul to his congregations.  Live the gift that is already your possession.  Let the water of life which has been directed into your life through baptism flow.
In the Acts of the Apostles (e.g., Acts 2:38) we encounter another point of view of how closely and almost inseparably Baptism and the gift of the Holy Spirit are connected.  Only in receiving the Holy Spirit is the gift of Baptism brought to fullness.  And vise versa it is the Holy Spirit that makes me aware of the incomparable gift we received in Baptism.  Therefore, we use every opportunity to pray that the Spirit of God disclose more deeply the source of grace in our Baptism.

Exercice
Symbol meditation:
Choose one of the suggested symbol pictures from the biblical texts cited above and meditate on the gift of your Baptism with the help of this picture.

Variations
- Hymn meditation
„ Baptized into Your name most holy,
Father, Son and Holy Ghost,
I claim a place, though weak and lowly.
Among Your seed, Your chosen host.
Buried with Christ, dead to sin.
I have your Spirit now  within.

My loving Father, here You take me
Henceforth to be Your child and heir;
My faithful Savior, here You make me
The fruit of all Your sorrows share;
O, Holy Ghost, You comfort me,
Though threat-'ning clouds around" (Rambach EG 200)

- Bodily Prayer:
- Ezekiel 37:1-14 ("And you shall live")

Read the text slowly several times with an inner empathy.  Then lie flat on the floor - "dead" - and let happen to you what is described in the text.  Let the movement grow as slowly as possible from within, surrendering yourself to the inner experience - without mentally steering or directing it: God has given you new life in Baptism...

- Word meditation:
"I am the Prophet
Ezekiel
a voice spoke to me

do you see the dead
over the entire land
do you see the dead
go and awaken them

I said
how shall I awaken them
from whence shall I bring this life
whence the spirit
that I awaken these
the voice said to me

speak to these dead bones
say to them
something very wonderful

I said
what shall I say to them
say something very wonderful

yes, said the voice-
say to them
they should arise
they should arise
and come to the feast
to the dance they should come

breathe into them
this hope
this spirit

but from where do I receive
this spirit
that makes them alive

and the voice
said
there is one
who has breathed out a spirit
a wonderful spirit
Jesus
has breathed a spirit
that made alive

this spirit remains in the air
say to them
they should breath deeply
the spirit Jesus
breathe in
he remains in the air
say to them
they should breathe
this hope
breathe in
breathe in deeply
hope..."               (Wilhelm Willms)

From this meditation text select a few lines and linger with them praying urgently and full  of trust.
