WEEK 13 - Day 1
Uniting our life with the body and blood of Jesus

Introduction
Once again we place the mystery of the Eucharist at the center of the exercise, but this time with a different accent.  We will tie into the last exercise unit of the twelfth week.  We take up the same theme in order to understand in a deeper way the last departing gift of Jesus to his disciples.  Here is the place Jesus makes it possible for us to participate with our lives in his mission.

Friedrich Hauck, New Testament professor points out in his research on the word "community", important aspects from the perspective of the last supper of Jesus.   Whoever takes part in Christ's community will also participate in the individual phases of Christ's life.  This community does not only involve a reliving of Jesus' suffering, not only a personal similarity or merely reflecting on the doctrine of the Passion, but through the "mystical participation in Christ" the suffering of a Christian is also an "important part of the total suffering that is inflicted on Christ" (Col. 1:24).
This biblical-theological consideration provides the basis for the first exercise as well as for the exercises for the entire week.

Exercice
Word meditation:
„God gives himself with all that he is for the feeding of his friends in the Last Supper.  Saint  Augustine trembled before this food and a voice spoke to him in the Spirit, "I am the food of greatness; grow and take and eat me!  You do not transform me in you, but you are transformed in me" .... „Never was there such a close union!  For the soul is much more closely united with God then the soul is to the body.“                        (Meister Eckehart)

Variations
- Luke 22:19 ff. ("Given for you- poured out for you")

- Symbol meditation:

Meditate on the pelican, an ancient Christian symbol for the death of Jesus, which according to legend feeds its young with its own blood (meditating on a symbol is often helpful for growing into a new understanding of a spiritual reality over a longer time)...
