Somewhere and somehow God's love has touched us, otherwise we would not likely pick up a book like this.Through the centuries Christianity has sought to persuade unbelievers of the existence of God and the meaningfulness of God's revelation through various proofs of God. This is both appropriate and inappropriate. We inevitably begin with our own experience of being touched by God, however that has happened. Often it may be only a deep, restless yearning that we, in retrospect, recognize to be God's touch "addressing" us. When we follow these impulses and enter more and more into this mystery, gradually (or suddenly and intrusively) a deep transformation takes place in the way we view life.
God has a sacred history enacted in every person with and through the story of their life. Our personal sacred history is hidden within seemingly accidental happenings and events. It takes the perspective of prayerful meditation, the pondering of our life story, to recognize the sacred history hidden there. In such times of pondering we may become aware of what has been "God's touch" but never before perceived as such. When the love of God enters our sacred history and when we become aware of this, then our story can become a genuine "proof of God". Then we may also discover God's sacred work in nature and in history just as it has been affirmed throughout biblical thought. We cannot persuade other people who do not come with this prior understanding of their experience if they have not discovered this new view of themselves. We believe so that we can experience. We love so that we can recognize the love which envelops our life. Only with such faith and with such love will we know that this is true.
