When Jesus says of himself, "I am the Light of the world", the matter does not stop there. He continues: "Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life". He goes even further when he says, "You are the light of the world" (Mt. 5:14).In order to experience what this can mean for us let us take a walk with a small group of people with each person holding a lighted candle in their hand. Proceed outside into the open and return again to the meeting room. Only a few people will be able to keep their candle burning throughout the entire walk. You will, no doubt, need to re-light your candle from others. After the walk share your observations.
- All candles receive their light from one candle . . .
- When the light is taken out of the room it is in danger. . . .
- Only when someone else protects their light better than we do, are we able to re-light our candle again.
- If we don't adjust the position of the candle properly when we go outside it will certainly go out. .
- In order to protect the light we must go slowly. . . .
- We must shield the light often with our body to protect it. . .
- Sometimes the flame is so small we think it has gone out but it is still burning.
- Our light is especially endangered when we try to light another candle in an unprotected place.
- When we carry our candle along with others we are less troubled as to what other people think than when we are alone. . . .
- When we concentrate only on the flame we forget that our behavior appears crazy to others . .
- It is good to be able to return from the outside into a protected space again...
- Matthew 5:14 ("I am the Light of the world")Meditate on the above mentioned aspects of this word of Jesus for our life.
