Here we deal with something that is very simple yet it is one of the most difficult things in the Christian life to endure: knowledge that God sees us - setting aside our thoughts and allowing ourselves to be looked at by God. This is possible only when we feel this "look" (symbolic word!) as a look of love and kindness.
It is important that we remain aware of the fact that the icon carries a reality within itself. We know that we are not being looked at by the icon itself but by the living God who encounters us through the icon. In this way we experience ourselves in the gaze of the three "Persons" who in their "deliberation" have us "in view". (We should not forget that nearly all icons are symbolic pictures! We will go into this in detail in the next section.)
- Andrei Rublev - The Trinity (Meditation on picture )
Look and let yourself be looked at. Nothing more...
Andrei Rublev - The Redeemer (Meditation on icon)Look and let yourself be looked at... Don't evade the gaze, but remain in it . . stand firm in the reality that declares: "God, you see me". Listen within yourself. What feelings does this gazing and being gazed upon release in you? How do you experience yourself under these eyes? Does your awareness change in the course of the meditation? Can you pray before these eyes?
